A massage gun listing throws four different specs at you — amplitude, RPM, stall force, torque — and they are not interchangeable. This decoder normalizes what each one actually measures and which one best predicts what a device feels like under real hand pressure, not on an empty countertop.

The one thing to know: Non-disclosure of stall force is extremely common in this category, and it is itself a meaningful finding, not a data gap to gloss over. Several widely sold models publish amplitude and RPM prominently while omitting stall force entirely, or publish it only through third-party review testing rather than an official spec sheet. When a brand omits stall force, that omission does not tell you the device performs badly under pressure — it tells you the brand chose not to make that specific, verifiable claim, and buyers are left to rely on independent measurement or their own testing.

Why stall force is the closest thing to a real-world predictor
Amplitude and RPM are the two specs every massage-gun listing leads with, but neither one tells you what happens when you actually press the device into muscle. Stall force — the amount of resistance, in pounds, at which the motor stops moving the arm — is the spec that answers that question, and it is the one manufacturers are least consistent about disclosing. A gun with a long, impressive-sounding amplitude can still stall out under firm real-world pressure if its motor is underpowered, while a shorter-stroke gun with a strong motor can hold its stroke length under load. Read the amplitude and RPM as marketing headlines; read stall force, when it is disclosed and verifiable, as the closer proxy for real-world firmness.
Why torque almost never shows up on a spec sheet
Torque is the underlying rotational force a massage gun's motor produces, which its drive mechanism converts into the linear back-and-forth stroke you feel. In principle it's the most fundamental measure of motor power. In practice, almost no consumer massage gun brand publishes a torque figure — it requires knowing internal mechanical details that are harder for buyers to interpret than a straightforward pounds-of-stall-force number. Stall force has effectively become torque's practical, buyer-facing stand-in.
